Thomas Heatherwick

Thomas Heatherwick is an architect who designed the British pavilion at the expo.

British pavilion

He designed the first building was 20 years ago. After that, he has developed a studio in London, then his studio built a lot of buildings like a hospital building, a shop for a bag company, a window display, etc. What my favorite building is the sculpture he designed for expo, which made from a million yards of wire and 150,000 glass beads the size of golf ball. He got his inspiration from children’s play-doh toys, it is a very different but interesting method which comes from daily life. In addition, the exterior of the building looks very technological and futuristic.

The materials he used is glass, which is a recycling material and in the future, recycling resources will be popular because of sustainable.

3 artists who are working for sustainable

I would like to introduce three artists who are working for sustainability.

The first one is Caitlind Brown, he made a beautiful art with 6, 000 used light bulbs, it’s called ‘The cloud of light bulbs’ . A scale interactive lighting device, each bulb is hung with metal wires, which allow the viewer to control the switch of the bulb, creating a huge cloud of flashing lights. Most of the 6,000 bulbs come from donations and recycling. The rubbish that throws away casually, also can be so beautiful originally.

The second artist is Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo carved thousands of small iceman, 1, 000 of them on the steps of a concert hall in Berlin, Germany. Each iceman melts and breaks at different times depending on the temperature. The artist hopes that through this kind of artistic action, the audience can make it easier for more people to remind people of the climate change that is relevent to all life on earth.

The last artist is Jonas Merian. He is a freelance furniture designer. He collected different materials such as scrap iron boxes, even old secondhand bricks from destroyed houses, which is called ‘up cycling ’. What he did is a sustainable way for reusing wasted materials.

Through the search of these three artists, I know that sustainable development can be combined with visual communication design in the future, which will be a very beneficial trend in the near future

Tate Museum in London

On this Friday I went to the Tate Museum in London. It’s a beautiful building and it leaves a deep impression on me.

Eurus took this photo outside the museum.

Tate Museum includes a lot of different types of art , such as oil paintings, sculptures, photography, print art, videos.

This television is broadcasting a video, I just took a photo.

When I visiting this museum I found that every work has its own background, for example, the picture followed shows the transgenders who were preparing for the New York City Pride Parade. Goldin, the photographer said that “ The people in these pictures are truly revolutionary. They are the real winners of the battle of the sexes because they have stepped out of the ring.”

The transgenders

What Goldin said moved me. Through this two transgenders in this picture, I saw the confidence they have, it shows their pursuit of beauty.

Nowadays LGBTQ is still a group suffering unfair treated in some countries, such as India, China. That is wrong. In my opinion, what we need to change is the mind and attitude about them and the best method is just treating them like normal people.

There are still lots of things I saw are interesting and it’s a real valuable visiting.

Cyber bullying–my first project

Last week I started my first project in UCA. It was a really memorable process and I learnt a lot about how to study with partners.

Firstly we did some research about cyber bullying and found some related elements for our art works. About the elements we decided is form the angle of victims, perpetrator and broadcast. Then we discussed about the form which can express our mind better(Fig1), finally, we all thought poster is a good method. After these two processes, we made the actual posters.

Fig1. We are discussing our project.

When I was writing my proposal, I met a big problem, that is I never write articles like that and the method of annotating literature is too difficult to understand quickly. I had to spend a lot of time to figure it out. I just wrote it slowly and learnt how to write at the same time. In the end, I finished it on time, that is totally a difficult work and I am happy that I figure it out!

It is a good experience for me, I learnt lots of about cyber bullying and how to write a proposal and I also have a new friend!

Cornelia Parker

On this Tuesday I did some research about the artist named Cornelia Parker. I wanted to know how she creates her works and what she try to express. I watched some videos about Cornelia and the way she used to create work to learn how to use these ways to creation.

Cornelia Parker is an English visual artist, best known for her sculpture and installation art. Through the videos I found she usually do her work with something special. The things what she used look like cliché, such as no-more-useful teapots, paper, sliver, toys, tools, her own things, furniture, etc. She broke them then rebuilt them and make a new form to show others what the material changed. In addition, she can start work in everywhere, like the one of the streets in London(fig1) or just at home.

Fig1. She was creating on the streets of London.

She is famous for her acts of destruction which shows the different from normal art. Many of her works have been controversial due to her different process–steamrolling, blowing up, wrapping and melting objects to produce a raw material to rebuilt(fig2).

In my opinion, this process shows the fact that history could be represent. she is trying to change the world through her own ways, she always focus on how to break the traditional thinking and give others a bran-new visual impression. By searching her works and thoughts I learnt, I need to change myself and try to go out like her to find something interesting to rebuild, on the other hand, if I try to, art always could change myself, even the world.

My first week in UCA

It was a sunny afternoon, I just arrived in Farnham.
Farnham is a beautiful town with a lot of plant and tiny flowers.
Thursday I went to Brighton to visit Brighton Museum, I never saw buildings like that, it’s half-round!

This suit showed in this museum is cool.
On Saturday I went to Chinatown with my new friends, this is the gate with Chinese traditional style.
After the visit of Chinatown, when I was walking on the street, I went into a toy store and then I found a Haigrid made by Lego in the down stair, he is a character in Harry Potter, which is my favourite magic movie, by the way, I like play LEGO as well!
